The Artist

Meet DJ Ownby

Known to friends and clients alike as “DJ the Turtle,” Donald Ownby Jr. has spent more than fifteen years with a machine in his hand. His roots are in comic-book pencil art, and you can still feel it in everything he draws — bold line work, deep shading, and characters that look like they could climb right off the skin.

In 2019 he opened the doors of Turtle Style Tattoo Company in downtown Broadway, just ten minutes north of Harrisonburg off I-81. The shop doubles as a small local art gallery, giving regional artists a place to show their work alongside the tattooing.

DJ works across black & grey realism, illustrative and neo-traditional styles, lettering, and some of the best cover-up work in the valley. Whatever you bring in, the goal is the same: take the time to get it right, keep you comfortable through the whole process, and send you home with something you’ll be proud of for life.

— Slow and steady. Always.

The Turtle Style Promise
What We Do

Services & Specialties

A tattoo-only studio focused on custom design. Bring a clear idea, a rough sketch, or just a feeling — we’ll build it together from the first consult to the final line.

Custom Design

Every piece is drawn for you. No flash-off-the-wall unless you want it — your concept, your placement, your story.

Cover-Ups & Concealment

Tired of an old tattoo? Cover-up and reworks are a house specialty — turning regrets into pieces you’ll actually love.

Black & Grey Realism

Smooth gradients, depth, and detail. Portraits, animals, florals, and dark illustrative work that holds up over time.

Illustrative & Neo-Traditional

Bold outlines and rich character — that comic-book eye brought to life. Color or black & grey.

Lettering & Script

Names, quotes, and meaningful words rendered in clean, custom lettering that reads beautifully for years.

Scar & Stretch-Mark Cover-Ups

Thoughtful, gentle work designed to blend, soften, and reclaim skin you’d rather not think about.

More than a tattoo shop: Turtle Style also serves as a local art gallery for consignment artists in the region — stop in to see (and support) Shenandoah Valley creators.
After Your Appointment

Healing & Aftercare

A great tattoo is half the job — healing it well is the other half. DJ follows up with every client, but here’s the short version to keep your new ink looking its best.

Keep It Covered

Leave the initial wrap on as directed. Your artist will tell you exactly when to remove it.

Clean Gently

Wash with clean hands and mild, fragrance-free soap. Pat dry — never rub.

Moisturize Lightly

A thin layer of the recommended aftercare product, a few times a day. Less is more.

Protect It

No soaking, scratching, or direct sun while healing. Questions? Call us — follow-up is always free.

We use vegan and organic supplies of the highest caliber to keep healing clean and comfortable. If anything looks off as you heal, reach out — troubleshooting and touch-up guidance come standard.
Good to Know

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an appointment?

Yes — we work by appointment so each client gets dedicated time and attention. Scheduling is flexible, and a paid deposit holds your spot. Walk-ins may be accommodated when the schedule allows, but booking ahead is your best bet.

Is the consultation really free?

Always. Come in, share your idea, and we’ll talk through design, placement, sizing, and pricing — no charge, no pressure. The consult is where the best tattoos start.

How do deposits work?

A deposit is required to book and goes toward the final cost of your tattoo. It reserves your time and covers the custom drawing done ahead of your session.

Can you cover up or rework an old tattoo?

Absolutely — cover-ups and reworks are one of our specialties, along with scar and stretch-mark cover-ups. Bring a clear photo to your consult and we’ll map out what’s possible.

Do you tattoo minors?

Clients must meet Virginia’s legal age requirements and bring valid photo ID. If you have questions about specifics, give us a call before booking.

What styles do you specialize in?

Black & grey realism, illustrative and neo-traditional, lettering and script, and custom cover-up work — with a comic-book-influenced eye for character and detail.
